When the weather cools and the nights grow longer, I begin to yearn for one of my favorite fall pints, Java Porter. And if you are in the same frame of mind as I am, then you will have to wait no longer. Java Porter Ale makes its long awaited debut this Thursday, October 16th in the BBC/Lennie’s Brewpub.
We have been making our acclaimed fall seasonal Java Porter long before I used to work at Bloomington Brewing Company and Lennie’s Restaurant and Brewpub in 2002. The blending of coffee to this traditional, workingman’s beer has always seemed to fit just right in the brewing cosmos. Maybe it’s the flavors of chocolate and coffee in the Porter Ale. Maybe it is the roasty, yet subtle sweetness of the Cold Brew Extract from our dear friends at Brown County Coffee that fits in nicely with the beer. Either way, we just don’t want to have one without the other.
The story of the Porter Ale dates back to England in 1730, with a brewer named Ralph Harwood in a pub called The Dellin Shoreditch, but texts from others date the origin back to as early as 1721. Noted in its name as a beer common to the laborers of London before and during the rise of the Industrial Revolution in the 19th Century, Porters have evolved from a higher strength beer in its infancy, to the lighter gravity styles it is known for today(except of course for the high strength Baltic Porters). Today, the American craft brewer has added their own interpretation to the style, adding high amounts of hops, and flavorings to create a unique brand all to their own.
We at Bloomington Brewing Company are no different. We take a traditional style Robust Porter and add cold brew coffee extract from Brown County Coffee. Cold Brew Coffee is made by taking large quantities of a blend of ground coffee and “steeping” the beans overnight in water stored in a cooler. This method extracts a maximum amount of aroma and flavor that our Java Porter so rightly deserves. We blend the two after the beer is finished fermenting, then carbonated and headed to your pint glass.
Beer is a blend of science and art; and in the case of Java Porter, collaboration. We owe a big thanks to Nick and the gang at Brown County Coffee to help us create and provide to you our very own Java Porter. See you Thursday night at the pub and out and about around town and the state. And, as always, thanks for supporting local, craft beer. We love what we do and hope you love what we make each day. Cheers!
